WARNING: Before taking any of these medications please talk with your Doctor about all of the risks and benefits of the medications.

Panic attacks usually begin abruptly

Panic attacks usually begin abruptly, reach a peak within 10 minutes, and subside over the next several hours.

Almost everybody who suffers from panic attacks will experience similar symptoms. Unless the person has a history of having panic attacks, is otherwise healthy, and is experiencing a typical attack, they must be evaluated promptly by a doctor.

A medical professional is the only person who should make the diagnosis of panic attack. Most doctors prescribe panic attack medication in conjunction with cognitive or behavioral therapy.

The first types of panic attack medication are the antidepressants. There are four major families of antidepressants:

Antidepressants

Antidepressants - anxiety drugs are also effective for panic attacks and some phobias and are often prescribed for these conditions. TCAs can effectively reduce the frequency and symptoms of panic attacks in approximately 25% of the people who tolerate them.

The most commonly used benzodiazepines are alprazolam (Xanax) and diazepam (Valium), followed by chlordiazepoxide (Librium, Librax, Libritabs). The dosage will vary a great deal depending on the symptoms and the individual's body chemistry.

Benzodiazepines

Benzodiazepines - anxiety drugs have few side effects. Xanax and Klonopin are examples of these drugs, and have been FDA-approved to treat panic attacks. Other side effects are rare.

Benzodiazepines combined with other medications can present a problem, notably when taken together with commonly used substances such as alcohol, because benzodiazepine medications act as sedatives. Following the doctor's instructions is important.

Particular benzodiazepines may influence the action of some anticonvulsant and cardiac medications. They are most effective in attack prevention when combined with TCAs.
